A stamped patio, a pool deck, or a hot tub pad still lives or dies on the same fundamentals as a plain driveway pour — compacted base, correct thickness, rebar or mesh where it's needed, and slope for drainage. The difference is what happens on top: a pattern, a colour, a texture that turns a functional slab into a finished outdoor space.
We quote decorative work the same way we quote everything else — on-site, after seeing the space, with a real written number. Not a per-square-foot guess over the phone.

Protecting a higher-ticket pour
Decorative concrete needs more upkeep than plain grey.
Seal it, and re-seal it. The sealer is what protects the colour and texture from Alberta’s freeze-thaw cycle and road salt. We recommend re-sealing stamped or coloured concrete every 2-3 years — more often than the 3-5 years for plain broom-finish work.
Spec it for the load. A hot tub pad isn’t a patio slab with a hot tub sitting on it — it needs to be sized and reinforced for thousands of pounds of loaded weight. We spec this before we quote, not after the tub shows up.
Grade it for drainage. Pool decks and patios both need proper slope away from the structure. Get the grade wrong and you’re dealing with pooling water and ice by the following winter — on a finish that cost more to begin with.

How much more does stamped concrete cost than a plain broom-finish slab?

Stamped and coloured concrete costs more than plain broom finish because of the extra labour — release agent, stamping the pattern before the concrete sets up, detail work at edges and around obstacles, and usually a sealer coat after curing. The exact premium depends on the pattern complexity and area size, which is why we quote it on-site rather than as a flat per-square-foot add-on.
Does stamped concrete hold up to Alberta winters and road salt?

Yes, when it's properly sealed and re-sealed on schedule. The sealer is what protects both the colour and the stamped texture from freeze-thaw and salt damage — skip re-sealing and you'll see fading and surface wear faster than on plain grey concrete. We recommend re-sealing every 2-3 years for stamped work, a bit more often than the 3-5 years we suggest for plain concrete.
Do you build hot tub pads and pool decks?

Yes. Hot tub pads need to be sized and reinforced for the loaded weight of a full tub — often 4,000+ lbs with water and people — not just poured like a standard patio slab. Pool decks need proper slope for drainage away from the pool and a slip-resistant finish. Both are things we spec before we quote, not after.
What's the difference between stamped concrete and exposed aggregate?

Stamped concrete uses textured mats pressed into the surface before it cures to create a pattern — stone, slate, or brick-look textures. Exposed aggregate is finished by washing away the top layer of cement paste so the decorative stone mixed into the concrete shows through. Both are decorative upgrades over plain broom finish; which one fits depends on the look you want and the application.
Can you add a parking pad or extra parking space to my property?

Yes — extra parking pads for a second vehicle, RV, trailer, or boat are a common add-on to a driveway job. We check setback rules and, if it's a legal secondary suite property, parking requirements before we pour, so it's compliant as well as functional.
Do I need a permit for a patio or decorative concrete pad in Alberta?

Most standalone patios and pads don't need a building permit, but it depends on your municipality and whether the pad supports a structure like a hot tub or attached deck. We'll tell you if your specific job needs one before we start — we're not going to pour something that gets flagged later.
